Jean Dubuffet Nasce a Le Havre il 31 luglio 1901. Studia in
una scuola d'arte, e nel 1918 si reca a Parigi per frequentare l'Académie Julian,
che lascia dopo sei mesi. In questo periodo incontra Suzanne Valadon, Raoul Dufy,
Fernand Léger e Max Jacob, e rimane affascinato dal libro di Hans Prinzhorn
sull'arte degli alienati; nel 1923 viaggia in Italia e nel 1924 in Sudamerica.
Smette poi di dipingere per circa dieci anni: lavora come disegnatore
industriale e in seguito si occupa dell'azienda vinicola di famiglia. Si dedica
esclusivamente all'arte a partire dal 1942.
Nel 1944 tiene la prima personale alla Galerie René Drouin di Parigi. Negli anni
'40 frequenta assiduamente Charles Ratton, Jean Paulhan, Georges Limbour e André
Breron; in questo periodo lo stile e i temi delle sue opere risentono
dell'influenza di Paul Klee. Dal 1945 raccoglie opere Art Brut, lavori
spontanei, immediati, prodotti da persone prive di specifica formazione
artistica, come i malati mentali. Nel 1947 tiene la prima personale a New York,
alla Pierre Matisse Gallery.
Dal 1951 al 1952 risiede a New York; ritorna in seguito a Parigi, dove ha luogo
nel 1954 una retrospettiva al Cercle Volney. Lo Schloss Morsbroich a Leverkusen,
in Germania, è il primo museo che gli dedica, nel 1957, una retrospettiva a cui
fanno seguito altre importanti mostre al Musée des Arts Décoratifs di Parigi, al
Museum of Modern Art di New York, all'Art Institute of Chicago, allo Stedelijk
Museum di Amsterdam, alla Tate Gallery di Londra e al Museo Solomon R.
Guggenheim di New York. Nel 1964 espone a Palazzo Grassi, Venezia, i dipinti
della serie L'Hourloupe, iniziata due anni prima e nel 1967 pubblica la raccolta
di scritti Prospectus et tous écrits suivants. Nello stesso anno realizza le sue
strutture architettoniche e inizia, poco dopo, numerose commissioni per sculture
monumentali da porre all'aperto. Nel 1971 realizza i suoi primi oggetti scenici,
i "practicables". Nel 1980-81 un'importante retrospettiva della sua opera è
allestita all'Akademie der Kunst di Berlino, al Museum Moderner Kunst di Vienna
e alla Joseph-Haubrichkunsthalle di Colonia. Nel 1981 il Museo Solomon R.
Guggenheim di New York gli dedica una mostra in occasione del suo ottantesimo
compleanno. Dubuffet muore a Parigi il 12 maggio 1985.

Jean Dubuffet Born in Le Havre on July 31, 1901. He studied in a school
of art, and in 1918 he went to Paris to attend the Académie Julian, who leaves
after six months. During this period meets Suzanne Valadon, Raoul Dufy, Fernand
Léger and Max Jacob, and remains fascinated by Hans Prinzhorn's book on the art
