Sandro Chia, nato a Firenze il 20 aprile 1946. Studi presso
l'Istituto d'Arte e poi all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze, ottenendo il
diploma nel 1969. Dopo la laurea, viaggia a lungo in India, in Turchia, ed in
tutta Europa prima di stabilirsi a Roma nel 1970.
Durante l'anno 1970 si espone più volte a Roma e in Europa, allontanandosi
gradualmente dal lavoro concettuale verso uno stile più figurativo della
pittura. Tra il settembre 1980 e agosto 1981 ottiene una borsa di studio dalla
città di Monchengladbach, in Germania, dove si trasferisce a lavorare per un
anno. L'anno successivo è a New York, dove rimarrà per oltre due decenni, con
frequenti viaggi di ritorno a Ronciglione e poi Montalcino successivamente.
Ha fatto parte del movimento italiano "Transavanguardia" , che espongono in
molti dei più importanti musei e gallerie del mondo. Chia Ha esposto alla
Biennale di Parigi e di San Paolo e numerose volte alla Biennale di Venezia. Il
suo lavoro è stato parte di diverse prestigiose mostra colletive in alcuni dei
più importanti musei del mondo. Fra le sue mostre personali più importanti
ricordiamo quelle presso: lo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam (1983), il
Metropolitan Museum di New York (1984), la National Galerie di Berlino (1984,
1992), il Museo di Arte Moderna di Parigi (1984); I musei di Dusseldorf (1984),
Anversa (1989), Città del Messico (1989); Palazzo Medici Riccardi a Firenze
(1991); musei di Karlsruhe (1992), Palm Springs (1993), Villa Medici a Roma
(1995); Palazzo Reale di Milano (1997), il Boca Raton Museum of Art, Florida
(1997), la Galleria Civica di Siena (1997), la Galleria Civica di Trento (2000),
il Museo d'Arte di Ravenna (2000); Palazzo Pitti e il Museo Archeologico
Nazionale di Firenze (2002), e, più recentemente, il Duomo di S. Agostino a
Pietrasanta (2005).
Nel 2003, lo Stato italiano ha acquisito tre importanti opere per la sua
collezione permanente del Senato della Repubblica a Palazzo Madama, e nel 2005,
due sculture monumentali sono stati acquistate dalla Provincia di Roma e poste
di fronte la sua sede in Via IV Novembre a Roma .
Oggi Sandro Chia vive tra Miami, Roma e il suo Castello Romitorio con cantina e
vigna presso Montalcino, dove ha seguito anche la produzione di vini
prestigiosi, tra i quali il famoso vino Brunello. |

Sandro Chia,
Born in Florence on 20th April 1946. Studies at the Istituto d?Arte and then at
the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, gaining his diploma in 1969. After
graduating, he travels extensively in India, Turkey and throughout Europe before
settling in Rome in 1970.
During the 1970?s he exhibits many times in Rome and Europe, gradually
transitioning away from the conceptual field of work toward a more figurative
style of painting. Between September 1980 and August 1981 he obtains a
scholarship from the city of Monchengladbach in Germany where he moves to work
for a year. The following year he is in New York, where he will remain for over
two decades, with frequent trips back to Ronciglione first and then Montalcino
subsequently.
He has been part of the Italian ?Transavanguardia? movement, exhibiting in many
of the most important museums and galleries of the world. Chia has exhibited at
the Biennale of Paris and San Paolo and numerous times at the Venice Biennale.
His work has been part of various prestigious group shows in some of the most
important museums of the world. Amongst his most important personal shows are

In 2003, the Italian State acquired three important works of his for the
permanent collection of the Italian Senate at Palazzo Madama, and in 2005 two
monumental sculptures were acquired by the Province of Rome and placed in front
of its headquarters in Via IV Novembre, Rome.
Today Sandro Chia lives between Miami, Rome and his Castello Romitorio
wine-making estate in Montalcino, where he also follows the production of
prestigious wines, amongst which the world-famous Brunello wine. |
