Appel Karel pittore e scultore olandese nasce ad Amsterdam
il 25 aprile 1921. Dal 1940 al 1943 studia alla Rijksakademie van Beeldende
Kunsten di Amsterdam. Nel 1946 tiene la prima personale all?Het Beerenhuis di
Groninga, in Olanda, e partecipa alla mostra ?Jonge Schilders? allo Stedelijk
Museum di Amsterdam; in questo periodo è influenzato prima da Pablo Picasso e
Henri Matisse, poi da Jean Dubuffet. Fa parte del Nederlandse Experimentele
Groep e nel 1948 dà vita con Constant e Corneille al gruppo "Reflex".
Sempre nel nel 1948, fonda il gruppo CoBrA insieme con Constant, Corneille, Asger Jorn e Pierre Alechinsky.
Nel 1949 realizza un affresco per il ristorante del municipio di Amsterdam, che
suscita tanto scalpore da essere coperto per dieci anni.
Nel 1950 è a Parigi dove, tramite lo scrittore Ugo Claus, conosce Michel Tapié,
che gli organizza diverse mostre. Nel 1953 tiene una personale al Palais de
Beaux-Arts di Bruxelles; nel 1954 riceve il premio dell?UNESCO alla Biennale di
Venezia e nel 1956 gli viene commissionata una pittura murale per il ristorante
dello Stedelijk Museum. L?anno successivo visita il Messico e gli Stati Uniti e
vince un premio di grafica alla Biennale di Ljubljana in Iugoslavia; nel 1959
gli viene assegnato il premio internazionale per la Pittura alla Biennale di San
Paolo. La prima importante monografia di Appel, scritta da Claus, esce nel 1962.
Alla fine degli anni ?60 si trasferisce al Château de Molesmes, presso Auxerre,
a sud-est di Parigi. Nel 1968 il Centre National d?Art Contemporain di Parigi e
lo Stedelijk Museum di Amsterdam e nel 1969 la Kunsthalle Basel e il Palais des
Beaux-Arts di Bruxelles organizzano sue personali. Negli anni ?50 e ?60 realizza
diverse pitture murali per edifici pubblici. Nel 1970 tiene un?importante mostra
al Centraal Museum di Utrecht, e nel 1972 una retrospettiva itinerante in Canada
e negli Stati Uniti. Attualmente l?artista vive fra New York e Firenze.
